Reading is the gateway to knowledge. Once a child can read fluently and independently, they widen their world. We therefore place great emphasis on teaching children to read as early as possible in their school careers and encourage it as a hobby and a tool throughout their time with us.

Fiction, plays and poems form an integral part of many lessons, with not only the reading and comprehension of a text being significant, but also how theme, style, structure and language are used. Whole class, small group and independent reading activities enhance speaking, listening and writing tasks, develop reading skills and encourage personal enjoyment and enthusiasm for reading.

We teach reading by means of synthetic phonics, the traditional method of associating letters with sounds that has been proven to be the most effective way to teach children to read, including children with learning difficulties.

Spelling, handwriting, vocabulary, grammatical accuracy and creative style are all developed to high standards. The children’s written work is regularly shared and celebrated in House meetings and assemblies.

We have many events in the school year that serve to promote literacy, including the much-coveted poetry competition, readathon and public speaking competition. We also invite authors to speak to the children and ensure there are workshops that show them how storytelling, writing and reading can be used to inspire others and make a difference.

Our aim is to have all children reading independently and feeling able to express themselves in writing by the end of Year 1. To achieve this, we ask for the support of parents, who are encouraged to read to – and with – their children every day. Working in partnership with parents is very important to us and helps the children to progress rapidly.

The best way to see the school in action is to book onto an open morning. These events last approximately an hour – you will have an opportunity to meet the Head and have a tour of the school led by the Year Six pupils. We look forward to welcoming you to Maple Walk soon.
