Professor Stephen Hawking Memorial

It was an auspicious occasion last Friday (June 15) when 3 of our Year 6 pupils and their teacher, Mr Cobb, attended the memorial service for Professor Stephen Hawking at Westminster Abbey.

The event, which was open to the public via an international ticket lottery, celebrated the life of the renowned scientist.

The children listened to readings by the actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who played Professor Hawking in his biopic, and by astronaut Major Tim Peake.

Mr Cobb said: "From the moment the organ in the Abbey vibrated through us and the choir began to sing, we knew we were at something very, very special...

"We sang hymns and listened to prayers, whilst trying to absorb our immense surroundings. Then the children watched as Stephen Hawking’s ashes were interred next those of Sir Isaac Newton in the floor of the Nave."
